Chapter 298: Chapter 298: Curing Ubuyashiki illness 1
"That’s assuming he’s telling the truth," Obanai said, his skeptical gaze fixed on me, his snake slithering slightly as though sharing his wariness.
I met Obanai’s distrustful stare with calm indifference. "Obanai, I don’t need to lie about something as insignificant as this." My voice was steady, unfazed by his suspicion. "But enough talk. Let’s get started, shall we?"
Before anyone could question me further, I opened my inventory, retrieving a simple but sharp knife and a small cup. The Hashira, now fully attentive, watched with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension. Without hesitation, I gripped the blade and sliced across my forearm. Blood flowed freely, pooling into the cup as the room erupted in startled reactions.
"Alex-san, what are you—!" Shinobu started, her voice tinged with alarm.
Before she could finish, the wound on my arm began to close, the torn flesh knitting back together in seconds. The Hashira fell silent, their expressions a mix of disbelief and awe. Sanemi’s eyes widened slightly before narrowing again, his suspicion now mingled with begrudging intrigue.
The reason I used my own blood instead of a Yggdrasil healing potion ran through my mind. Healing potions from my world were immensely powerful, but they weren’t designed to counter curses, especially ones as deeply embedded as the hereditary curse afflicting Ubuyashiki.
This curse wasn’t just an ordinary ailment; it was a demon’s malice woven into the bloodline itself, shortening the lifespans of the male members of the Ubuyashiki family. None of them knew that, of course. To the people in this room, it likely looked like I had just mutilated myself for no apparent reason.
"Why would you cut yourself like that?" Obanai demanded, his voice sharp, though a flicker of unease crossed his face.
I held up the cup, now filled with the rich crimson liquid. "Because this is what’s necessary. My blood has properties that go beyond what your world’s medicine or techniques can offer. It’s not just blood—it’s magic, power, and vitality concentrated into a form that can counteract curses like the one affecting Ubuyashiki."
Ubuyashiki’s serene voice broke through the tension. "Your abilities continue to surprise me, Alex. But I must ask, are you certain this will work?"
I nodded. "Yes. I’ve dealt with curses like this before. My blood carries regenerative properties far beyond anything you’ve seen, and it has a unique ability to purge and neutralize foreign elements within the body. It won’t just heal you—it will erase the curse entirely."
Sanemi let out a skeptical huff. "And what if it doesn’t? What if this is just some grand show to make us trust you?"
I turned to him, meeting his challenging gaze. "If it doesn’t work, you can do whatever you want to me. But it will work."
The other Hashira exchanged uncertain glances. Giyu, standing quietly in the corner, finally spoke up. "If Alex is willing to risk his credibility and face punishment should this fail, perhaps we should let him proceed. At the very least, it’s an opportunity we can’t ignore."
Ubuyashiki raised a hand, silencing further debate. "I trust Alex’s intentions. If he believes this will heal me, I am willing to accept his aid."
I stepped forward, handing the cup to Ubuyashiki. "Drink this slowly. You may feel some discomfort as the curse begins to dissolve, but it will pass quickly."
Ubuyashiki hesitated for a moment, then smiled softly. "If what you say is true, then you’ve brought a miracle to this household. I’ll trust you, Alex."
He reached out, his frail hands trembling slightly as he took the cup. His condition was a testament to the curse he bore—a deformed face covered in scars, and sightless, milky-white eyes that spoke of a long battle against his deteriorating health. Everyone watched in silence as he raised the cup to his lips and drank.
The effect was almost immediate.
As the blood coursed through his body, a faint glow began to emanate from his skin. The scars marring his face softened and faded, and his twisted features began to regain their natural form. His milky eyes slowly cleared, revealing a pair of dark irises that gleamed with newfound vitality.
The room erupted into gasps as Ubuyashiki’s transformation unfolded before them. Shinobu stepped closer, her scientific curiosity overtaking her usual composure. "This is... incredible," she murmured, her eyes wide with disbelief.
Even Sanemi, who had been the most vocal skeptic, was rendered speechless. His arms fell to his sides as he stared at Ubuyashiki, his expression a mixture of awe and confusion.
Tengen, ever the showman, broke the silence with a low whistle. "Now that’s what I call flashy. Alex, you really don’t hold back, do you?"
Ubuyashiki set the cup down and touched his face, his fingers brushing over smooth skin that had been scarred for decades. Tears welled in his newly restored eyes as he turned to me, his voice trembling with gratitude. "Alex... I don’t know how to thank you. You’ve done more for me than I could have ever imagined."
I nodded, keeping my tone even. "There’s no need for thanks. Consider it a step toward strengthening the Corps. A leader as important as you shouldn’t have to suffer under the weight of a curse."
Mitsuri, who had been silent until now, clasped her hands together, her eyes shimmering with emotion. "Alex, this is amazing! You’ve given Ubuyashiki-sama a chance to live without pain. Thank you!"
"Just a thanks; I expect something more from you." I murmur to Mitsuri so nobody else can hear.
Hearing that, Mitsuri blushed. "Please wait till night." She said back to me.
