Chapter 625: Chapter 327: My family’s Jane Quinlan is a clever girl (1 update)
It was already past one o’clock when I got back to the office, and if I were at Nolan Moore’s, I would be considered late.
But I’m now by Kay Forrest’s side, so this little delay can’t be counted as being late.
Because no one would care.
I happily greeted Wendy upon my return.
Wendy was puzzled; this woman seemed to be in a good mood, but she couldn’t be bothered with her.
Of course, Jane Quinlan was in a good mood, the Evie Larkin she had to face before was a hypocritical backstabber.
But now, our relationship is clear, we stand on opposing sides, and I don’t have to pretend to maintain peace on the surface while being wary of her behind the scenes.
I actually feel much more relaxed now.
I pushed the door open into Kay Forrest’s office, where he was sitting with his legs crossed: "That took you quite a while; have you eaten yet?"
Jane Quinlan pouted: "Actually, no."
"Tsk, you woman, not keeping your word, didn’t you say you’d eat?"
Jane Quinlan stuck out her tongue: "I’m not hungry right now, can I go eat when I am hungry later?"
"No way, lunch is lunch. Come on, I’ll take you to the cafeteria to make do with something."
"Ah, there’s no one in the cafeteria at this time."
"If I go, there has to be someone."
He didn’t listen to her and got up to drag her out.
When they entered the cafeteria, the staff had already started mopping the floor, and Kay Forrest asked the chef to make some sour and refreshing dishes just for Jane Quinlan.
They found a corner spot to sit down, and Kay said: "You’re busier than me."
Jane Quinlan pursed her lips: "Being busy is good, it gives a greater sense of accomplishment."
"Oh, please, that sense of accomplishment is pretty lowly."
Jane Quinlan thought about it and asked: "About that courier matter, how did you handle it?"
Kay Forrest folded his arms: "I haven’t dealt with it yet, just went to talk to Nolan Moore."
"Evie Larkin said she didn’t send the package," Jane Quinlan said, her expression indifferent.
Kay Forrest furrowed his brows: "Was she the one you met this noon?"
Jane Quinlan hesitated for a moment: "I didn’t initially want to tell you about this.
But on the way back just now, I kept thinking, we’re about to get married soon.
Spouses shouldn’t have secrets, so I’ve decided to tell you.
It’s just... you have to promise me not to get agitated after knowing what I’ve been doing these past two days."
"Let’s hear it," Kay Forrest said, his arms folded as he stared at her, curious to know what fresh news she had to share.
Jane Quinlan nodded and told Kay Forrest about the juice incident from yesterday and today’s meeting with Evie Larkin.
She didn’t just share the pleasing parts, she also told him about her splashing juice on Evie.
Honesty means sharing everything.
After hearing Jane’s account, Kay Forrest immediately got furious; the dishes hadn’t even arrived, and he was ready to leave.
Jane Quinlan stood up to grab him: "What are you planning to do?"
"I’m going to strangle that woman; she actually wants to harm my child?
She’s seriously seeking death, does she really think I, Kay Forrest, am afraid to confront her?
You sit there and eat, don’t worry about me."
Jane Quinlan held onto his hand tightly: "Just calm down and listen to me first."
Kay Forrest snorted: "You want to talk me out of this? I never hold back, anger must be vented."
"There’s no rush at this moment, it’s not too late to go after you’ve heard me out."
Eventually, Jane Quinlan got Kay Forrest to sit down.
She sat next to him: "I’m angry too, but splashing her with juice made me feel sorry for our child.
But when I met Evie Larkin, I thought about a lot of things.
Evie Larkin is deeply entrenched in the Forrest Family tree.
To uproot her completely would also make Grayson Forrest suffer.
We can’t just think about ourselves and the child, without regard for Grayson Forrest.
Evie Larkin doesn’t care about Grayson, but you have to; he’s your real father.
I know you love me deeply, and you truly don’t want anyone to bully me.
But, I can see how guilty Grayson feels towards Evie Larkin, even as an outsider.
Grayson is a man with a conscience; we can’t force him to be disloyal and unfaithful because of our own problems.
That would make Grayson unhappy.
Evie Larkin must be dealt with, but not necessarily in a way that upsets Grayson.
Let’s deal with her in our own way, make her completely disappear from our world."
Kay Forrest was deeply moved to know that Jane Quinlan had considered all this; she wasn’t just thinking of her own interests but also his and the old man’s.
"I always said you weren’t the sharpest tool in the shed; now I apologize for my own thoughts.
My Jane Quinlan is a smart girl."
Jane Quinlan curled her lip: "Your apology comes too late, but I’ll accept it.
I’ve been telling you for a long time, I’m a smart person with good grades.
It’s just that next to you, my intelligence seems to have been overshadowed."
"Tsk tsk, looks like I don’t have any flaws in your eyes, huh," Kay Forrest proudly ran his fingers through the hair on his forehead.
Jane Quinlan gave him a look: "How can you not have flaws? You’re so impulsive. Don’t you know impulse is the devil?
What was the point of you just now charging into the office to make a scene with Evie Larkin?
Nothing would have changed. Instead, it would have made you look like a man lacking in grace—a woman without dignity.
Kay forced lightly tapped her head: "Oh, so you’ve learned to lecture me now, huh?"
"If you do something wrong in the future, I’m going to have to school you. Are you supposed to grow wings and fly away, then?
My man, I have to manage him properly.
No matter how much of a wanderer you were before, you still have to turn over a new leaf."
Jane Quinlan raised her eyebrows smugly, while Kay Forrest shook his head with a smile and affectionately ruffled her hair.
When Evie Larkin returned to the office, the dirty stains on her body attracted everyone’s attention.
Nolan Moore came out to look for her and couldn’t help but wonder at her disheveled appearance: "Evie, what happened to you?"
Evie Larkin pressed her lips together and stood up: "I’m sorry for dressing like this during work hours."
"How did you end up like this?"
Evie Larkin closed her eyes: "I just went to see Jane Quinlan."
"Did Jane do this?" Nolan Moore felt that Jane Quinlan and Evie Larkin’s relationship would never improve, but surely it hadn’t escalated to the point of throwing juice on each other, right?
Evie Larkin bit her lip and looked at him: "I know you don’t trust me anymore, so let’s not talk about this.
Nolan, do you have any orders? Although I’m dressed against company policy.
I will work to the best of my ability."
After a moment of silence, Nolan Moore handed her a file: "Process this document this afternoon; I’ll need it for a meeting tomorrow."
He had many questions he wanted to ask, but after thinking it through, he let it be.
There were some matters he could no longer interfere with. On one hand, his trust in Evie Larkin was waning, on the other, Jane Quinlan and Kay Forrest’s lovey-dovey relationship was thriving, while Evie Larkin continuously attempted to interfere and cause trouble.
"Okay," Evie Larkin took the file, sat down, and opened it.
Nolan Moore glanced at her one more time before turning and entering his room.
After dinner, Kay Forrest escorted Jane Quinlan back to the office.
He didn’t go in, asking the two to stay put as he had to step out for a bit.
Jane Quinlan, fearing she would stir up trouble, quickly followed him: "Where are you heading to?"
"Don’t worry, I’m not going to find Evie Larkin. Before you came back, dad called me to help him look over a project."
"Really?" Jane Quinlan looked at him worriedly: "Don’t lie to me, okay? Didn’t you say that you don’t like others lying to you? I don’t like being lied to either."
"Why would I lie to you? Just wait here; I’ll be right back." He smiled and indulgently rubbed her head. Lie to her? He couldn’t even if he wanted to.
Jane Quinlan nodded and watched him enter the elevator. Seeing it indeed going up, she felt reassured and went back.
Kay Forrest arrived at Grayson Forrest’s office, his hands pocketed and his manner casual: "Dad, don’t blame me for being late. I just had lunch with Jane Quinlan."
"How is Jane doing? Is the morning sickness still severe?"
"It’s quite bad. During her pregnancy, I plan to spend more time with her.
Otherwise, who knows when she’d be bullied by someone else."
"What do you mean? Who would bully her besides you?
She is now your recognized fiancée."
"Isn’t there? Your benefactor’s daughter, she almost caused Jane Quinlan to have a miscarriage the day before yesterday."
The news tightened Grayson Forrest’s brows: "What happened?"
"This woman had lunch with my assistant and had her bring back a cup of aloe vera juice for Jane Quinlan.
The juice was even mixed with hawthorn juice.
Luckily, Jane had done her homework before and knew that hawthorn is not good for pregnant women in the early stages.
If she had drunk that juice that day, I dare not even think about the consequences.
Aloe vera is also cold in nature and could easily cause a miscarriage."
Grayson Forrest felt a tightness in his chest when he heard this: "Could there be some misunderstanding? Evie, no matter how willful, wouldn’t ..."
"Dad, this isn’t about willfulness. It’s about a moral collapse.
The restaurant’s menu clearly stated it was forbidden for pregnant women.
She knew about Jane’s pregnancy, but others didn’t.
Speaking more seriously, it’s like she wanted to use someone else’s hand to murder my child."
Grayson Forrest’s brows knotted slightly: "How is Jane doing? Does she know about this?"
"Jane found out something was wrong and went to the restaurant to obtain surveillance footage, that’s how she knew the juice didn’t come from my assistant, but from Evie Larkin.
I only found out about it this noon. I wanted to confront Evie Larkin, but Jane stopped me.
She said that I shouldn’t just take care of her, I should also consider your feelings.
She doesn’t want to put you in a difficult position between us and Evie Larkin."
Kay Forrest’s expression grew colder: "Dad, don’t say I don’t consider your feelings, I just can’t swallow this indignation.
Jane is pregnant and I can’t let her worry about this kind of thing.
Evie Larkin must be dealt with.
She has crossed the line too long, and your indulgence has not made her grateful and restrained.
This incident is my final line.
I’m not asking you to take sides, but you must not interfere with this matter. If you don’t, there won’t be any difficulty."
