Chapter 8 Startled and Feverish

Lin An's anxious appearance was nothing like what the villagers said about her not caring about his life or death.

"Zhang family, why are you helping her? She's the mother, and she only found out now that the child is sick. She's not attentive at all," the old aunt shouted at Zhang Cuihua. "It's clearly an act. Looking at how lazy she is, I get angry. Washing a bedsheet, she's dawdling."

"Exactly. I said she has bad intentions. She never comes out to wash clothes, but suddenly she's so good to Lin An. Could she be planning to sell Lin An!" the daughter-in-law washing clothes next to the old aunt also said.

"You two, watch your mouths!" Zhang Cuihua glared at them. They would say anything.

"This educated youth from the city, she became a stepmother as soon as she got married. If it were you, would you be any better!" The white-haired old lady next to Zhang Cuihua also spoke. The old aunt glanced at the old lady, snorted, but said nothing more.

"Mother, why are you speaking up for her?" The daughter-in-law next to the old lady looked at her mother-in-law curiously.

"I have eyes, and I can see. The way she held the little child just now, she didn't look heartless. If she were truly heartless, the child wouldn't follow her," the old lady said calmly. How could anyone's genuine concern be faked?

Hearing the old lady's words, the nearby women who had been eavesdropping felt a trace of curiosity towards Fu Wenwen. However, they had to admit that her anxious appearance just now had indeed improved many people's impressions of her.

Fu Wenwen was unaware that after she left, the women almost argued over her. Holding Lin An's burning body, Fu Wenwen couldn't help but blame herself for her carelessness. Seeing him like this, he must have had a fever for a long time, yet she hadn't noticed.

Fu Wenwen ran through the fields carrying Lin An. Many villagers saw it. They watched as Fu Wenwen entered the health clinic at the entrance of the village with Lin An.

Someone immediately ran to the Lin family to inform Lin's mother. Lin's mother frowned upon hearing the news and quickly put down what she was doing and rushed to the health clinic.

"Mother, why are you bothering with her!" Lin Feng's younger brother, Lin Zhi, exclaimed.

"That's your brother's child. No matter what, he's still part of the Lin family. If anything really happens, how can I explain it to my eldest brother!" Lin's mother glared at her son and hurried out.

Fu Wenwen rushed into the health clinic with Lin An. An old doctor was sitting inside. Seeing Lin An's condition, he quickly asked Fu Wenwen to put Lin An on the bed. After examining him, he frowned. "He's burning up like this, why did you only bring him here now!"

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry..." Fu Wenwen kept apologizing.

Seeing Fu Wenwen's self-reproaching look, the old doctor's stern face softened a lot. He glanced at Lin An and asked, "Was he frightened?"

Fu Wenwen remembered that Lin An almost drowned that morning and quickly nodded. "He wanted to drink water today and fell into the water缸, almost drowning. Luckily, I noticed and pulled him out in time."

"No wonder. Almost drowned, he's scared out of his wits. Go home and call his name near the water缸 many times," the old doctor told Fu Wenwen.

"So, you're not going to do anything about him? No medicine?" Fu Wenwen frowned.

The old doctor raised an eyebrow and looked at Fu Wenwen. "The medicine at the health clinic isn't cheap. A single fever reducer costs one yuan."

Most villagers were reluctant to spend the money, and the old doctor was used to it, so he didn't think Fu Wenwen would be willing to spend one yuan on Lin An.
