Chapter 396: Chapter 357: It’s Best Not to Meet at All
"I’ll pick you up for lunch at noon." Bai Chengxi was driving with a Bluetooth earpiece on his ear.
"Mhm." Zhuo Yuqing responded softly, not realizing there was a hint of grievance in her voice.
"What’s making you unhappy?" Although it was through a phone call, Bai Chengxi still keenly sensed something was off with her voice.
Zhuo Yuqing was momentarily dazed. She had said only one word, and yet he could tell she was unhappy. However, she didn’t want him to get involved with the magazine issues, and most importantly, even though they were married, their relationship wasn’t at the stage where she should trouble him to step in on her behalf.
"It’s nothing. I didn’t sleep well last night and am a bit tired."
"Got it."
Zhuo Yuqing had yet to speak when the call was already ended on the other side. She stared blankly for a while before sighing silently. It seemed to be Bai Chengxi’s usual way of doing things.
Turning on her computer, the news about Chi Ming was everywhere, mostly negative voices accusing him of cheating during his marriage. Yet, Zhuo Yuqing noticed that Chi Ming’s new movie had finished filming and was in post-production; it should be released soon. Although this scandal was bad for Chi Ming, it made the unreleased movie popular before its premiere.
After perusing these pieces of news, she naturally typed three characters in the search bar: Bai Chengxi.
Pressing the Enter key brought up a plethora of news about Bai Chengxi. As a tycoon of the entertainment industry, it was normal for him to be in the news, but it was all positive without any unsavory rumors.
She picked a few articles to read, all discussing the several movies he made in recent years and the top stars he had helped rise to fame. Of course, some news was speculative, using his photos with female stars to attract eyeballs.
Zhuo Yuqing discovered that in these photos with female celebrities, though it seemed as if Bai Chengxi was embracing their waists, closer observation would reveal that his hand was not actually on their waists but just hovered lightly. This discovery raised her impression of him significantly; it seemed he was not the kind of man to take advantage of his position.
Finally, it was noon. Zhuo Yuqing’s phone rang; she saw the incoming call and immediately declined it, then quickly grabbed her purse and ran downstairs.
Upon exiting the magazine office, she saw the familiar Bentley. Opening the car door, Bai Chengxi was sitting in the driver’s seat smoking, flipping through a phone in his other hand.
"Why didn’t you answer the phone?" He put out his cigarette.
"Saving you phone charges." Zhuo Yuqing smiled and buckled her seatbelt. "Where are we going to eat?"
He put away his phone, "What do you feel like eating?"
"Haven’t decided."
"If you haven’t decided, then let’s go to Xiangshan." He started the car and halfway through the journey, suddenly asked her, "Chi Ming’s news isn’t too bad, right?"
"Today, he’s all over the headlines, and they’re all badmouthing him." Zhuo Yuqing frowned slightly. "People like Chi Ming who cheat during marriage deserve it."
She didn’t mention that Tong Bi had taken her news scoop as if she had been wronged and wanted him to seek revenge on her behalf.
"You guys are planning to promote his new movie, right?" Zhuo Yuqing’s intuition told her that Bai Chengxi wouldn’t ruin his own artists like this; there had to be a hidden agenda.
Bai Chengxi glanced at her, a hint of playfulness in his good-looking eyes: "Is that what you think?"
Caught by his gaze, Zhuo Yuqing inexplicably felt guilty. He had already helped her substantially by sharing inside information with her; doubting him now seemed somewhat disgraceful.
"You didn’t report today’s news, did you?" Bai Chengxi’s voice suddenly floated over, sounding detached.
Zhuo Yuqing looked at him in surprise, and betrayed herself in haste: "How did you know?" After speaking, she belatedly covered her mouth.
"Simple. I glanced at the author’s name below the article and noticed it wasn’t Zhuo Yuqing." Bai Chengxi’s tone did not reveal any particular emotion, but Zhuo Yuqing felt he seemed displeased.
She was thinking about how to explain to him when Bai Chengxi spoke first: "It seems you’re still not fully embracing your role. You are Bai Chengxi’s wife. If you feel wronged, you should tell me immediately, instead of pretending nothing has happened in front me."
"I... I just didn’t want to trouble you."
"Forget it." Bai Chengxi suddenly looked stern.
Perhaps he was asking too much of her. Zhuo Yuqing didn’t have feelings for him, and it was normal for her to worry about troubling him. He didn’t understand why he cared so much about her every word and deed, knowing full well they came together for a purpose, but he just felt like lashing out.
