Chapter 7: Chapter 7: The Demon King Smiled
May Lawrence’s expression softened instantly.
She wiped her tears and pulled Nora Northwood to sit on the simple single bed.
"Nora, tell mom about him. What’s he like? What does he do?"
Nora looked at May’s gentle face, mixed feelings swelling in her heart.
She handed over the marriage certificate, suddenly recalling Jasper Sinclair’s towering figure shielding her from the wind.
"He’s quite good, has a car and a house, life won’t be hard."
May’s eyes brightened for a moment.
"Nora, is the house his? Where is it located?"
May worked as a second-hand house agent, so Nora just thought it was a professional habit and didn’t hide anything.
"East City, Southwood Court."
"Southwood Court? The average price is over ten thousand, then he really is quite wealthy. Nora, let me tell you, you and he are now legally married. You have the right to know what his assets are before marriage. When a man has money, he tends to become more cunning; you must manage this well after marriage. Don’t be like me, constantly being controlled, understand?"
Nora couldn’t tell if May genuinely cared for her but still gave a muffled grunt without arguing.
Upon knowing the other family was well-off, May’s mood improved greatly, and she looked at the marriage certificate several more times before returning it to Nora.
"Once the bride price is transferred this afternoon, ask him to come over for dinner tonight. We’re all family now; it’s time to get acquainted. Your brother has his eye on a school in East City, and your uncle and I were worried it’s far from home. But now, if he doesn’t get used to living at the school, he can stay with you, and his brother-in-law has a car, making it convenient for transport..."
"Mom, there’s no way I’m letting Spencer Ford live with me!" Nora interrupted May’s fantasy with unusual firmness, "Also, he’s on a business trip, can’t come over."
This was why May couldn’t possibly care for her life; she just wanted to use her marriage to benefit Spencer Ford.
The bride price of 188,000, she would pay herself; it was her fee to escape this mire of bondage and seek freedom, requiring no cover from anyone.
But she would never let her future be dominated by The Ford Family again.
If that were the case, what was the use of marrying!
May’s face darkened, but she didn’t get angry.
"Fine, fine, you’ve grown up, and now you’re married, mom can’t dictate anymore! After all these years of hardship, mom ends up being blamed!"
With that, she wiped her eyes and rose, sighing as she walked away.
Nora felt as if a massive stone pressed against her chest.
She clenched her fists tightly, having compromised enough over the years; she could not yield anymore!
She pulled up her suitcase, ready to leave this overly oppressive home, but Quentin Ford blocked her in the living room.
"It’s after twelve, so it’s afternoon. Now call him and ask him to transfer the money. Until this is settled, I absolutely won’t let you move in."
Nora’s little face tensed, and the shadows from years of being beaten made her body uncontrollably tremble with fear.
Subconsciously, she glanced at May Lawrence, who peeked out from the bedroom before retreating back, leaving no hope in her heart.
Cynically, she mocked herself, what exactly was she expecting?
Though embarrassed, she still pulled out her phone to call Grandma Sinclair.
Before the call wasn’t even dialed, the notification sound for money arriving in her bank account went off.
One hundred and eighty-eight thousand, not a penny more, not a penny less.
Upon hearing the bride price was transferred, May immediately emerged from the room with a red envelope.
"Nora, mom doesn’t have much to give for your marriage. This is a one-thousand-dollar gift, take it, and live well with your spouse in the future!"
