Chapter 446: Chapter 446: So Biased
"What’s this? Just a meal. But my grandson... Leon Keane... the gift he brought me today will truly amaze you. You all know, he’s the wealthiest in R City; his gifts are definitely extraordinary."
Many people have vanity, and old Pierce is no exception.
Old friends then chimed in with flattering words and expressions of envy.
At this moment.
Preston Pierce and Lucas Pierce arrived.
"Grandfather, I wish you happiness as vast as the eastern sea and longevity like the southern mountains."
Lucas Pierce gave a look to the secretary beside him, who then presented the gift in his hand to old Pierce.
"This is a gift President Pierce carefully selected for you, sir," the secretary said with a smile.
Old Pierce laughed happily: "Jackie, it’s good enough that you came yourself. Why bring a gift? What a waste of money!"
"Oh~ Pierce, that’s not right. Your grandson is being considerate! How can you call it a waste of money?"
"Exactly! Old Pierce’s grandson has his career developing so well! So young and already President Pierce. Extraordinary, extraordinary."
"..."
Lucas Pierce showed a proud expression, identical to that of old Pierce.
"Old Pierce, quickly open it and let us all see what precious gift your grandson has given you," one of the old friends suggested.
"Yes! We all want to see,"
The other old friends echoed the suggestion.
The smile on old Pierce’s face stiffened, feeling a bit unwilling inside, because he had told Jackie last night not to prepare any expensive gifts—something worth a hundred or so, as long as it was nicely packaged would do.
He adored this grandson, always giving him money, how could he let him spend lavishly?
Lucas Pierce felt awkward, because the gift was not something valuable; it was just worth a hundred or so and merely packaged nicely as requested by his grandfather. If it was opened on the spot, wouldn’t it be a laughingstock and utterly embarrassing?
"Ahem, let’s not do that, Grandfather. Please open the gift at home," Lucas Pierce reminded.
"Mm, mm, Jackie is right."
Old Pierce understood perfectly well.
He said to his old friends: "Jackie is my precious grandson. I must cherish what he gives me, so I won’t show it to you. Other grandchildren’s gifts can be shown, but not Jackie’s!"
The old friends laughed.
"Old Pierce, you surely adore your grandson too much! A gift from him is treasured like this."
"Oh~ who wouldn’t adore their grandson? What’s the meaning of grandson? It’s about inheriting the family business, carrying on the lineage, and can’t be compared to granddaughters or external grandchildren."
"True."
The old friends nodded. People of their generation all had several children, born with the belief that having no son was unacceptable—feudal thinking deeply ingrained.
So, when talking about "grandson," their expressions were always different.
Lucas Pierce sighed a breath of relief, as long as the gift wasn’t unwrapped.
"I said not to come, Dad, but you insisted to come. See, your old father never treats us as family. I’m a granddaughter, an outsider."
Sarah Pierce listened to what those old guys said and felt uneasy.
Moreover, old Pierce wasn’t very good to their family.
Sarah Pierce didn’t even feel like calling "grandfather" anymore.
Shirley Pearson’s face was also not very pleasant. She and her daughter didn’t want to come initially; it was her husband who persuaded them tirelessly before dragging them over.
"Sarah, don’t say that, your grandfather didn’t mean to," Peter Pierce earnestly reprimanded Sarah.
Sarah Pierce pursed her lips, not saying a word.
"Sarah Pierce, how are you talking to your grandfather? Really ill-mannered, bring the gift here." Old Pierce showed a stern face to Sarah Pierce, reaching out to ask her for a gift.
"All you do is ask for gifts."
Sarah Pierce muttered. Peter Pierce tugged her sleeve, and though Sarah didn’t retort, she brought over the gift.
"Grandfather, I’m really curious about what Sarah Pierce has gifted you." Lucas Pierce suddenly spoke.
Sarah Pierce glared at Lucas Pierce: "What I gifted Grandfather is none of your business!"
"Look at your sharp tongue, no wonder no man likes you and you’re still unmarried. Whoever marries you will be unfortunate."
Lucas Pierce had been fighting with Sarah Pierce since childhood, and even as adults, they couldn’t stand each other.
Whenever they met, they argued as a habitual occurrence.
"Is that any of your business? Focus on yourself! Stop going to health clubs daily, or you’ll catch AIDS."
"Sarah Pierce, are you cursing me?"
Lucas Pierce was furious.
"If that’s how you interpret it, then yes!"
Bang!
Old Pierce slammed the table hard, suddenly standing up to point at Sarah Pierce and scold: "Unacceptable! I want you to apologize to Jackie immediately. If you don’t, then leave; you’re not welcome at my birthday feast."
Everyone was startled.
Sarah Pierce’s eyes reddened instantly, fingers clenched tightly.
Lucas was the one who provoked her, why should she apologize?
Such favoritism, extreme favoritism.
"Who cares?" Sarah Pierce spat angrily, turning and running out.
"Sarah~" Shirley Pearson saw her daughter run away, and felt both heartbroken and angry, turning to old Pierce and said: "Dad, you’re going too far, joining in on children’s quarrels at your age."
"Who’s extreme? Your daughter isn’t well-raised, she even cursed my grandson. Would she be happy if Jackie got sick? I warn you, if Jackie has any health issues, I won’t spare your lousy daughter."
Shirley Pearson was mad: "Crazy old man."
Peter Pierce tugged Shirley’s hand: "Today is dad’s birthday; don’t act like this."
Shirley Pearson snapped Peter’s hand off, sharply saying: "What should I do? Whatever I do, your dad won’t be satisfied. His heart will only ever have Lucas as his grandson. You be the filial son yourself. I’m done; my daughter is what’s most important to me."
Having said that, Shirley ran off to chase Sarah.
Sarah Pierce ran outside and almost collided with someone.
Leon Keane pulled Ivana Monroe over, avoiding the danger.
"Sorry, I’m sorry."
Realizing her mistake, Sarah Pierce cried and apologized.
"It’s okay, what’s wrong?"
Ivana saw Sarah crying and didn’t understand what happened, she kindly showed concern.
"Nothing,"
Despite saying this, Sarah’s tears flowed even more fiercely.
Shirley chased out, grabbed Sarah, saying with pity: "Sarah, don’t cry; mom will leave with you."
Unable to hold back anymore, Sarah sobbed while hugging Shirley tightly: "How could Grandfather be so biased? How could he? I’m so heartbroken. Mom, I don’t want to see him again; I really can’t stand it."
