Chapter 403: Chapter 240: Gu Qiye: Wenyu, I Am Actually Blue Arc

When Gu Qiye left the Mutants Association, he changed into a casual outfit.

He hung his head, standing silently in front of his house as if he were a student who was ten minutes late, hesitating to enter, for fear of being scolded by the class teacher with a ruler.

After a moment, Gu Qiye suddenly lifted his head and looked at the birds flying over the power grid and iron chains. The high-speed train thundered across the viaduct under the blood-red afterglow, stirring a breeze tinged with twilight.

He felt a bit tired, perhaps this should be the end, and in a few days, he would explain everything to the people at Rainbow Wings.

He gave up, not wanting to continue. After all, what would it matter if he pursued that elusive truth?

Could mother come back?

No, the family before his eyes was what really mattered.

If he didn’t turn back now, he might lose even the people by his side...

Gu Qiye hung his head low, remaining silent for a long while, suddenly curled a smile and reached out to turn the doorknob.

He inserted the key into the keyhole. Before he could unlock it, there was a "click" sound as someone opened the door from inside.

He raised an eyebrow and curiously looked up.

He saw Su Zimai in a snow-white nightgown, hands behind her back, looking at him without moving.

"I’ve been watching you for a while in the living room, just to see when you’d open the door." She demanded aggressively.

"I was just reflecting, I originally thought I was done for."

"And yet you don’t thank your dear sister! Without me, you’d have been gone long ago, throw me a nice meal tonight to reward me, did you hear me, did you hear me?"

"Of course."

Gu Qiye smiled, leaning against the door frame with his arms crossed, thinking as he spoke, "Let me think about what to cook today?"

Su Zimai paused for a moment: "I was really worried sick... didn’t close my eyes once these two days, kept waiting for your news, and then you came back like nothing happened, anyone would think you were out on a trip or something?"

"Got used to it."

"Used to it?"

"It’s happened many times before. Beaten half to death, then coming home as if nothing happened."

"How can you have the nerve to say that?!" Su Zimai glared at him.

"Alright, don’t be angry... And remember to thank Ke Qirui for me." Gu Qiye shrugged with a smile.

With that, he stepped into the house, loosening his shoe laces, taking off his sneakers, "By the way, didn’t you say a couple of days ago that you were leaving? Going to work with your leader in another city?"

"I told the leader I wanted to stay a few more days in Li Jing." Su Zimai said, "The leader agreed."

"So that’s how it is."

"What about you? Did the people from the Association say anything to you? Like letting you stay home to recover for a few days."

Gu Qiye was silent for a while, then suddenly said:

"Xiaomai, the people from Rainbow Wings have extended me an invitation."

Hearing this, Su Zimai stopped in her tracks, slowly raised her head and looked at Gu Qiye’s back.

"When?"

"Just today at noon, when I woke up in the Association building, Rainbow Wings’ ’Fan Dongqing’ and another member were sitting by the bed, they gave me a contract inviting me to join Rainbow Wings, to fill the last vacancy."

As Gu Qiye said this, he placed his sneakers on the shoe cabinet and turned his head to meet Su Zimai’s gaze.

Su Zimai looked at him in disbelief, staring blankly before speaking after a while:

"So, brother... you have a chance to find the person who killed mom?"

Gu Qiye slightly opened his mouth.

After a moment of silence, he nodded: "Yes, there is a chance."

"I see..." Su Zimai’s eyes shimmered slightly, a faint smile forming on her lips, "Then be safe, don’t end up like this time, beaten half to death, needing your dear sister to save you."

She paused: "After all, no matter how much I persuade you, you won’t give up, right?"

"Xiaomai, I..."

Gu Qiye lowered his head, hesitant to speak.

Su Zimai raised her head, looking at him puzzledly.

"I suddenly realized today, thinking maybe... we should just give up?"

Gu Qiye finally spoke those words, uneasily leaning against the shoe cabinet and sitting down, placing his hands behind him.

"Give up?"

"Yeah, actually I don’t want to join Rainbow Wings." Gu Qiye said slowly.

"What are you saying? Then all your efforts over the years would be for nothing?"

"I was too stubborn before, but our whole family is pretty stubborn, just like dad."

Gu Qiye laughed self-deprecatingly.

He paused for a while, "Yesterday I felt like I was about to die, it was so cold... I thought this time I might really not make it, before it was just luck, always brushing past death, but this time I woke up, I suddenly felt I might not come back next time."

He lowered his voice: "Then... I thought, maybe if we as a family let go of all those things earlier, living peacefully as we are now, would that be what mom wanted?"

After speaking, Gu Qiye slumped against the shoe cabinet, head hung low, his fringe covering his eyes.

He looked silently at his hands, not daring to look up to see his sister’s expression, nor did he dare to imagine what she might say to him.

Would she call him cowardly, or say he’s foolish? Or maybe harshly criticize him, saying he just forgot about mom like that?

Indeed, just such an unremarkable decision, and it turned all the efforts of the past five years to ashes. If he missed this opportunity, he might never get close to Rainbow Wings again.

"Will I regret it?"
