Chapter 34 The Sky Changes

"How about tonight, while they're off guard, we brothers go up and take care of them."

The one asking was Chen Youzhao, who made a throat-slitting gesture, his eyes filled with a fierce glint, looking ferocious.

Xu Daqiang put a cigarette in his mouth and looked back at Chen Youzhao, "Don't be fooled by her delicate young girl appearance, that knife in her hand isn't something just anyone can wield."

"Also, we've observed the situation outside. There are zombies everywhere. But this morning, I happened to catch a glimpse and noticed the streets were very clean, with no zombies in sight. Instead, there were signs of something being burned. I suspect she did it."

Chen Youzhao was about to retort that Su Ling, a mere girl, couldn't possibly possess such capability, but Xu Daqiang interrupted him before he could speak, "Tell someone to go down and close the supermarket doors, and preferably barricade them with things."

Walking to the window, Xu Daqiang looked down. "The weather's changing."

Hearing this, Chen Youzhao hurried over and looked out the window. The sun was shining brightly, the sky was clear and vast. It certainly looked like a change in weather.

Xu Daqiang turned back and saw Chen Youzhao looking utterly bewildered. He explained, "When I said the weather's changing, I wasn't referring to the climate, but to the state of this world."

Humans turning into zombies and preying on the living, wasn't that a change in the world?

This department store building was only a few hundred meters from the police station. The gunshots they fired were so obvious, yet hours after the gunfire ceased, not a single police officer or curious onlooker had arrived. This indicated that the world had indeed changed.

With this thought, Xu Daqiang instinctively reached for the gun holstered at his waist – his safeguard.

However, this item couldn't guarantee his unimpeded passage in a world overrun by zombies.

Before the apocalypse, Xu Daqiang loved reading apocalyptic novels.

His passion for these novels reached an obsessive level. Combined with his line of work, which involved dealing with the darker side of things, he had, through his own means, stockpiled some firearms and ammunition.

He had collected them on a whim, never expecting them to actually be useful.

As for why he and his four brothers were in this department store, it was simply because he was supposed to be making a transaction before the incident.

The transaction location was this very department store!

The reason for choosing this place was its high foot traffic, which served as good cover...

Who would have thought that the next time he opened his eyes, a bloody zombie would be lunging at him?

If it hadn't been for his quick reflexes and the shot that blew its head off, he would have already become one of them.

Then, with the cooperation of his four brothers, they cleared out the zombies in the department store, drove the survivors into a designated corner to be imprisoned, and reduced their consumption of resources.

Xu Daqiang knew this was far from enough.

Guns, ammunition, and supplies would eventually run out.

When that time came, the real test would begin.

He had read too many apocalyptic novels, and the depictions of human nature within them made him wary of those around him.

Seeing that Chen Youzhao still didn't grasp the meaning of his words, Xu Daqiang didn't want to explain further. He simply emphasized, "Close the supermarket doors to prevent anyone else from coming in. The outside is full of those monsters we cleared out, and it's not safe for us to go out."

At least, not for now. The situation outside was unclear, and he needed to observe for a while longer.

Chen Youzhao scratched his head, wanting to say something, but in the end, he said nothing. He merely called a man from the imprisoned survivors to go downstairs with him.

After Chen Youzhao and the man left, Xu Daqiang continued to stand by the window.

He looked at the devastation on the streets outside, his doubts intensifying—

Su Ling, were you really the one who cleared out the wandering zombies outside?

If so, then he had taken a risky gamble.

Such a person, if they could be utilized, would be an invaluable asset.

What a pity.
