Chapter 118: Chapter 118: They Are Husband and Wife
"So, how much do you want this time?" Nora Northwood scoffed.
The May Lawrence in front of her felt like a stranger, no longer the mother who once cared for her and comforted her.
Now all she saw in her eyes was money, and all she thought about was how to get money from her.
Feeling increasingly disappointed, she closed her eyes and couldn’t help but sigh.
"Fifty thousand would be enough, Nora." May Lawrence said weakly, her eyes red, "Nora, I truly don’t want to disturb your life, but Quentin Ford has pushed me to a dead end. I really have no other options."
Nora believed this; Quentin seemed like someone who would do such a thing.
However, there was one thing she didn’t believe: "I’ll transfer fifty thousand to your account. I hope if you genuinely don’t want to disturb my life, you won’t make a scene here. If things get out of hand, it will be me who ends up embarrassed."
For her, fifty thousand wasn’t a difficult amount to come up with.
But just thinking about it going to pay off Quentin’s gambling debts made her face fall.
"And your Mr. Ford said..."
"Mom, this fifty thousand is because of our mother-daughter relationship. I’m only agreeing so you don’t lose face too badly."
Nora decided to lay it out in the open. She lowered her gaze, looking at May Lawrence, noticing the hurt and guilt in her eyes, causing a faint ache in her heart.
"I understand, Nora." May Lawrence swallowed her words, turned around, and left.
It seemed like that was the end of the matter.
Unexpectedly, in the evening, Quentin Ford showed up with May Lawrence to make a scene.
"Everyone, judge for yourselves. She got married and lives in such a big community. Her family is in trouble, and she won’t even lend a hand."
"I raised her through hard work, and even though she’s not my biological daughter, she’s better than that, right? What a heartless wretch!"
"Today, her mother came to borrow money, but she sent her away like a beggar."
"Damn it, if I’d known she was like this, I should’ve kicked her out back then."
Quentin Ford whined like a woman, while May Lawrence hesitated to speak but said nothing.
Her timid demeanor caused Nora’s heart to sink further. What was she expecting?
She got up to deal with the situation, noticing more and more people in the community becoming aware and watching the commotion.
Jasper Sinclair grabbed her hand, "I’ll go with you."
Nora shook her head at him, "All they want is money. Once you’re there, they’ll drag you into it, and even if you refuse, you’ll have to agree."
Besides, if there’s someone to lose face, let it be her. There’s no need for Jasper to lose it with her.
"It’s alright, since we’re married, we should face it together." He insisted.
"I know, and I’m grateful that you choose to stand by my side, but can I handle this myself?"
She simply didn’t want Jasper Sinclair drawn into this.
Jasper Sinclair pressed his lips together and conceded, watching her back as she stepped out. He took out his phone and made a call.
"Sid, keep an eye on the Young Madam’s situation."
"Yes."
Sid was originally sent by him to protect Nora Northwood in secret. If the family got desperate, he could also ensure her safety.
Only then could he slightly ease his mind.
He walked to the balcony, watching Nora’s straight back at the entrance, his heart aching a little.
At this moment, outside the community gate, more and more people gathered, mostly to watch this farce.
Sid hid among the crowd, always paying attention to the Young Madam’s situation.
"Quentin Ford, you really have the nerve. Ask yourself honestly, how much of what you’re saying is true?"
